AI in Recruitment Screening and its Potential Risks

If you are using or thinking of using AI for recruiting and screening purposes, think carefully about it.

Most of us had hopes that AI would help eliminate biases… but AI, given it is trained and programmed to mimic what it learns from current datasets, is apparently perpetuating discrimination.

For example, according to a Bloomberg report, an analysis of AI generated images representing job personas reinforced gender and racial stereotypes worse than those found in the real world. Large companies, such as Amazon stopped using an AI screening tool because it was less likely to deem female applicants qualified for jobs in a male dominated logistics industry.

North American governments seem to be awakening to this, and various provinces (including Ontario) and states are requiring employers using AI technology in the recruiting process to disclose this to applicants. Ontario’s requirements came into effect this summer.

Is this enough, given what research and use of AI is showing us? What do you think?

If you are relying on AI in any part of your recruitment process, especially screening, consider its potential impact. I’d recommend auditing its functioning and asking very specific questions on how it is screening candidates. If need be, consider its continued use, based on what you find. You don’t want to run the risk of losing out on qualified candidates and opening yourself up to potential human rights violations.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this; send us an email. If you need any guidance with this, reach out to us.
